The Issues

on captaining

Captaining takes a tremendous amount of time and effort. I’m willing to give both.

Making playbooks, writing emails, sending individual feedback, planning trainings, holding tryouts, deciding the roster, organizing tournaments—all of this takes time and energy. A captain has to be more than well-intentioned, they have to know that for the next year Wall City is their job. I’m ready to make that commitment.

On strategy

We need more set plays, more offensive looks and more rules dictating our offensive flow.

Why don’t we have a split stack? What’s our handler structure against a zone? Why do we only have one endzone play? What happens after the first two passes in a side stack? All of these questions need answers. I’d like to be the one to answer them.

On player development

Every player should have their own explicit development goals which the captains help them achieve.

We want to win now with the talent we have now. But we also need to make sure we’re developing our players so that the team gets better over time rather than getting worse when good players retire. That means not only teaching younger players, but giving them more responsibility on the field during meaningful games.

On power

Captains should have a monopoly on final decisions, but they shouldn’t be the only voices on the team.

We have a lot of experienced players on the team who won’t be captains. Captains should elevate their voices by letting them run skill session and drills, and asking their input on team strategy.

on playing time

Playing time is based on ability, not fairness.

In important games captains should call lines based on skill and performance. Nobody is guaranteed any playing time, every point must be earned.

on lines

The team will be organized into an o-line and a d-line for the entire season.

The o-line should have a maximum of 9 players at any given time. The lines can change over the course of the season, but changes should be clearly communicated to the whole team. The lines provide a structure for who should generally play offense and defense, but they’re not unbreakable.

on communication

A team with two communication apps is a team with bad communication.

I advocate deleting the Slack group in favor of a new Wall City 2020 telegram group. Only rostered players and official practice players will be in the group.

on fashion

Having three different jersey colors is ridiculous.

The official colors of Wall City should be black and white, with yellow as an accent color. No more ambiguous yellow jerseys during scrimmages, no more unnecessary textile production.

On music

Music during warmups is great, but hip hop should be forbidden.

X is not going to give it to you. You have more than one shot, one opportunity. We're from Berlin and we'll play techno and house accordingly.

on constructive criticism

fighting with your teammates or blaming them for turnovers will not be tolerated.

It’s the job of the captains to set the tone for how the team talks to each other. Criticism should be constructive and communication should be mature. Failure to be respectful to your teammates should result in punishment, repeated failure should result in being kicked off the team.

on Tib relations

Ultimate is played on grass, field hockey is played on turf and jugger isn't a thing.

The fields should be allocated accordingly. I'll take the role of TiB liaison with the goal of maximizing time on the grass, including weekends.

On winter

If you don’t rest during the offseason, you can’t pwn during the season.

The more team events we have in the offseason the better, but winter training should not be mandatory. Winter is for recovery, strength training, bouldering, basketball, Magic the Gathering, social justice, getting high and the like. It’s clearly not the time to focus on outdoor sports.

On fashion again

We need freshly designed jerseys and shorts for the 2021 season.

Black and white shirts. Black shorts. Minimalist and clean. No more wacky, pointy numbers. Longsleeve encouraged.

on community

We should hang out with Jinx and Disc Kick more.

Ultimate is more fun when you have a community, not just a team. There should be more weekend mixed games, lake days and post-practice hangouts.

on language
